The SoHPS Education Sub-Group has reviewed the entry requirements for foundation degrees and apprenticeships in health play specialism to make sure they reflect the needs of the profession while opening up more opportunities for people to join the sector.

As part of this review, it was agreed that English will remain an essential entry requirement. However, GCSE Maths will no longer be required at the point of entry. If a Maths qualification is needed for a particular role, students will be supported to gain this during their studies. Functional Skills qualifications will continue to be accepted as an alternative to GCSEs.

The group also agreed to recognise a wider range of qualifications and experience, including T-levels, apprenticeship standards, related degrees, and relevant work experience or prior learning. This flexible approach aims to welcome learners from a range of backgrounds and help employers attract a more diverse and skilled workforce.

These changes are designed to support both students and employers—ensuring professional standards are met while making training more accessible to those passionate about becoming health play specialists.
