Caron qualified as a Health Play Specialist at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College in 2008 while working in the Children’s Emergency Department at Good Hope Hospital where she clocked-up 19 years in the role.

“Working in A+E is demanding but immensely rewarding because every day is different and you never know what you will be presented with, from a small cut to a significant wound, a cold to serious breathing difficulties – and everything in between.”

Every admission to the Emergency Department requires an individual approach, demanding a flexible and creative approach to Distraction. Caron says, “Sometimes there was no time to prepare, and distraction was something as simple as singing or playing peek-a-boo.” Support for families at an anxious and stressful time is also an important part of the HPS role.

“The most memorable moments of my career were the successful preparations, distractions and support provided for children, young people and their families.

  • When a parent says thank you and leaves the department reassured, that is memorable.
  • When a child who is needle phobic has a cannula put in their arm due to your distraction and reassurance, that is memorable.
  • When a child arrives in the department visibly distressed but leaves with a smile after your intervention, that is memorable.”

Caron’s message to new entrants the profession is just to be yourself, always smile and do your best.

“Being an HPS is very rewarding and essential in any health care setting.”

Caron’s retirement plans are to spend more time with family and going on holiday.

Cheers Caron! Goodbye and Thank you
